Background

Mr Dave Feeney (CEO Karuah LALC) requested some assistance from the Green Teams Alliance (GTA) in order to identify noxious and any other environmentally significant weeds at one of their property locations at Mallabula near Lemon Tree Passage. In an agreement between Karuah LALC and the GTA, Ben Smith (Operations Manager of the GTA) inspected the site to determine what weeds were present onsite and the best method for their control. During the inspection which was conducted on the 9^th August 2011 it was discovered that the site is generally in excellent health with a large diversity of native flora and low occurrence of weed species across the site. There was really only one area along the northern edge of the site that had any significant level of weed infestation. The only noxious species found in any abundance was Bitou Bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera) and Lantana (Lantana camara). Backpack spraying of these weed species commenced on the 10^th of August 2011 but due to strong winds experienced at the site, work was restricted to areas protected from the wind and away from the more exposed areas (beach areas to the north of the site). The red hatched area located on the site map below still requires chemical treatment and this will be sprayed by the Karuah LALC Green Team when conditions are more suited to spraying. This work should be carried out in a few weeks from the initial treatment so that the relative success of previous weed control work is visible. – Author B. Smith, Aug. 2011 (GTA)

The Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council Green Team will work to regenerate coastal habitat from Port Macquarie’s Town Beach to Flynns Beach over the next year.

The team of eight Hastings Aborigines have joined a program to address the high unemployment and social inequity in Aboriginal communities.

The project is coordinated by Green Teams Alliance in cooperation with Keep Australia Beautiful and Enterprise and Training Company (ETC).

The leader of the team of eight, Chris O’Brien, has for the first time an opportunity to put his training and assessment, conservation land management and horticulture qualification to use in one job.

As team supervisor and teacher, Mr O’Brien will help the seven trainees to get a qualification in conservation land management.

“It is a great learning and employment opportunity for the Aboriginal community,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We all know each other and get along well and have a great team dynamic.”

Work to repair and reconnect the vital coastal link between Sea Acres and Limeburners Creek Nature Reserves began on Monday.

Weeds in bushland and on difficult to manage steep areas along the coast will be removed and minimal planting performed.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s ecologist Bill Peel said the weed removal would reveal “the true beauty of the coast’s vistas and its diverse grasslands, woodlands and rainforests.”
